Homeopathy in USA

Homeopathy captured an enviable recognition in the American public, during the first half of 1800. Almost 20% of doctors were practicing Homeopathy in those years. In 1842, the Homeopathy practicing doctors constituted American Institute of Homeopathy (AIH). After four years, American Medical Association (AMA) was established in opposition to the AIH. Members of the AMA were discouraged on consulting a homeopath, and finally they were prohibited from practicing Homeopathy. While the system was in the pinnacle of glory, in 1890 Mark Twain, acknowledged the special value of Homeopathy in Harpers Magazine: “The introduction of Homeopathy forced the old school doctor to stir around and learn something of rational nature about his business… You may honestly feel grateful that Homeopathy survived the attempts of the orthodox physicians”.

The steep progress of homeopathy was nearly extinguished by the mid 1900s. In 1970, there were merely 50-100 homeopathic specialized physicians. However, after 10 years there were about 1000 homeopathic physicians. Homeopathy is in considerable demand and again began to flourish in the Unites States. According to Washington Post, the number of Homeopathic physicians who specialized in Homeopathy doubled from 1980 to 1982. Approximately, 1000 other health professionals in the US were using Homeopathic medicines, and those include dentists, psychologists, podiatrists, chiropractors, veterinarians, naturopaths, acupuncturists, physician assistants and nurses. This number represents only a small percentage of licensed health professionals.

The rediscovery of homeopathy by the American is even more encouraging. The FDA consumer magazine reported that a 1000% increase in the sales of Homeopathic medicines from late 1970 to early 1980s.
